Star Image & Development
How a star's image develops overtime through music videos..
2009 - 2015
Under the sheets - 2009
In the Music Video
The music video opens with Ellie’s hands playing a drum, to her with a black background, then leaving a bed occupied by an man and walking through a brick building surrounded by different versions of herself.
For example she’s seen sitting on the floor, playing guitar, writing her lyrics in her socks, riding a vintage bicycle and swinging in a hanging chair all at the same time. She is also seen playing drums covered in glitter.
Meaning of the song
Under the Sheets is about a girl and a guy who are in a relationship, but it's a very dark relationship, it's only based on being physical. It is not like a sexual song, it shows more that some relationships are based on nothing that is real, they are not based on something good.
Fashion
Throughout the video Ellie Goulding wears a black sequin top and high-top kicks and a plain shirt and a black jacket here and there. Her hair is just left opened and wavy.
LIGHTS - 2010
In the music video
In the video Ellie Goulding dances and is shown playing the drums and the tambourine whilst different lighting effects including lasers surround her as she sings. It also shows her in numerous scenes swinging different hand-held lights and torches around giving the impression of a light painting.
Meaning of the song
Lyrically, the song discusses the fear of the dark that Goulding had as a child, and how she could only sleep with the lights on.
Fashion
She wears a short black dress with black fingerless gloves, followed by big black boots throughout the video. She is also shown wearing a white shirt with a black collar, which is tucked into her black shorts in half of the scenes, and in a couple of scenes she wears a sparkly silver dress which is also short. Again her hair is left wavy.
FIGURE 8 - 2012
In the Music Video
The music video switches between black-and-white and coloured shots. It shows scenes of Ellie in a flat in several different situations, such as lying on a mattress as she clutches a red piece of cloth, lying in bed with her on-screen boyfriend and breaking dishes.
Meaning of the song
The song reflects on breaking up with an ex and then missing them.
Fashion
Ellie is shown in a white vest at the beginning of the video and then is covered in a red veil or ressed in a red flowing gown throughout. She has also shaved the side of her head and has pastel pink hair, where as usually she's a blonde.
BURN - 2013
In the Music Video
The video shows Ellie singing with friends and solar flares shining upon their movements with some smoke. The video also features a lot of people running and with Ellie wearing a hooded jacket. Ellie is seen in a gigantic field with hundreds of people carrying light spheres and the video ends with flares and more dancing. For the end, the lights form Ellie's logo in the field.
Meaning of the song
As there is no proper explanation about what the song means, but in my opinion, the song is about getting together and showing the world how to shine by spreading lights, maybe?
Fashion
Ellie wears a dark hooded jacket with a black top and black sneakers followed by shorts with a huge chain necklace and loads of rings. She has a sort of like a tomboy look for the first half of the video. Her outfit changes towards the end of the video where she wears a white crop top, and jacket followed by sparky short skirt, more lighter and girlier than before. Her hair is slightly straight then normal but is still quite wavy.
LOVE ME LIKE YOU DO - 2015
In the Music Video
It stars Ellie Goulding entering the mansion and then move on to her and her on-screen partner, ballroom dancing in the same mansion. There are also many short scenes from Fifty Shades of Grey.
Meaning of the song
The song is made for the film Fifty Shades of Grey, which only means the song is about the film.
Fashion
Ellie enters wearing a all black, black leather jacket, black top followed by a black bag and boots. She is then shown wearing her dancing costume which is also black and has her hair styled back for a change.
